Gorakhnath's Rule

My Comment: The following saying implies that we should not ask for what we don't deserve and instead let things come our way. Forcibly grabbing things or relationships is even worse. :-)

sahaj mila so doodh barabar

maang liya so paani

keench liya so rakt barabar

gorabh bole baani

English Translation:

That which is received effortlessly is like milk;

That which is asked for is like water;

That which is taken by force is like blood.

The Meaning:

Milk (Sahaj): What comes to you naturally or as a gift without your striving represents purity and nourishment.

Water (Maang): What you have to beg or ask for has lost its "flavor" or richness; it’s basic and lacks the dignity of the first.

Blood (Keench): What is snatched or taken through pressure and greed is tainted by pain and is spiritually harmful.
